2024 National Youth Games: South-South Zonal Elimination Set for Benin City

As the sports community gears up for the much-anticipated 2024 National Youth Games, taking place in Asaba, Delta State, the focus now turns to Edo State, which is set to host the South-South Zonal elimination games.

These competitive events, aimed at providing teams with the chance to qualify for the 8th Edition of the National Youth Games, are scheduled to run from Wednesday, August 28, through Sunday, September 1, 2024.

The anticipation surrounding these zonal games is palpable, as athletes from across the South-South zone prepare to showcase their talents across nine different sports disciplines. The choice of Benin City as the host location underscores the commitment of the Edo State Sports Commission to promote youth sports and foster a competitive spirit among young athletes.

The Programme of events signed by Mrs. A.P. Efe-Amenze, Director of Sports Development and Operations for the Edo State Sports Commission, outlines the various venues earmarked for specific sporting activities, ensuring that athletes will compete in facilities that are well-equipped for their respective disciplines. This meticulous planning reflects our dedication to providing an exceptional experience for participants.

Competitions are set to take place in several prestigious venues throughout the city, allowing each sport to shine in apt surroundings. Notably, the Indoor Sports Hall at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium will play host to the Handball contests, a promising setup for both competitors and spectators alike.

In addition to Handball, the games will feature a range of sports at designated locations, reflecting the diversity and richness of talent in the South-South region.

Hockey will be contested at St. Maria Gorretti College, situated along Upper Sokponba Road.
Beach Volleyball athletes will compete at Ihogbe College on ICE Road, a popular spot for local and regional events.
Cricket matches for boys and girls are scheduled at Edo Boys College and Iyoba College respectively, nurturing the next generation of cricket enthusiasts.

Football enthusiasts can look forward to exciting matches at Western Boys College, while the Rugby tournament will concurrently take place at Edo Boys College, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere for sports fans.

Furthermore, traditional and contemporary sports such as volleyball, basketball, and the indigenous game of Abula will find their homes in the Wire Road vicinity and at the Etete Indoor Sports Hall.
