Obaseki Plans Mandatory Surveillance Cameras to Amplify Public Safety and Security Success
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has revealed plans to amplify public safety and security within the state.
In a press briefing held in Benin City, the governor shared his plans to further strengthen security measures by making the installation of surveillance cameras compulsory for businesses and designated premises.
Obaseki expressed, “We have witnessed tremendous improvements in public safety and security through our progressive and practical strategies aimed at combatting crime in the state.”
He emphasized the pivotal role that community-led intelligence-gathering mechanisms have played, attributing the success to the training of over 5,000 community police personnel under the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) within the past year.
Collaborating with the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), the state has introduced emergency shortcodes, “112” and “739,” as quick and efficient channels for citizens to promptly access emergency services. This partnership ensures swift responses during critical situations.
To further enhance security infrastructure, the governor disclosed ongoing efforts to install street-wide cameras and lights, significantly bolstering surveillance capabilities and improving data collection.
Simultaneously, a dedicated Safety Commission has been established, responsible for overseeing safety compliance, including regulations pertaining to building safety, event safety, and fuel station safety.
Obaseki also emphasized the groundbreaking partnership between the state government and the Ministry of Health, enabling the seamless integration of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and a fleet of ambulances.
With plans to present a bill to the House of Assembly, Governor Obaseki plans to make it compulsory for businesses and designated premises to install surveillance cameras, ensuring a more secure environment for all residents and further building upon the state’s track record in maintaining public safety and security.
