Obaseki Inaugurates Local Government Autonomy Committee

Governor Godwin Obaseki has inaugurated a high-powered committee to spearhead the implementation of local government autonomy in Edo State.

Chaired by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Osaze Uzi, the committee will navigate the intricacies of decentralizing power and ensuring seamless service delivery.

At the inauguration ceremony, Governor Obaseki emphasized the need for a structured approach to implementing the Supreme Court’s judgment on local government funding. He highlighted critical areas requiring attention, including staff salaries, pensioner gratuities, traditional council staff, and primary healthcare services.

Obaseki stated, “As a law-abiding state, we’re committed to enforcing the Supreme Court’s judgment. This committee will develop modalities for joint responsibilities previously handled under JAAC, ensuring a smooth transition.”

The governor also underscored the importance of safeguarding teachers’ interests under the new autonomy arrangement, given the state’s investments in EdoBEST and basic education. He emphasized the need for a clear plan to manage primary healthcare funding, traditional leader emoluments, and local government service commission fees.

Obaseki concluded, “Time is of the essence. I expect the committee’s report by September 30, paving the way for full implementation by October 1, 2024.”

Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Monday Osaigbovo, assured the governor of the committee’s commitment to delivering on its mandate, saying, “We’ll adopt a modalities-driven approach to ensure seamless salary and pension payments, submitting our report within the stipulated timeframe.”
