Edo State Government Cracks Down on Environmental Offenders
The Edo State Government has launched a crackdown on residents and businesses violating environmental laws, warning them to desist or face sanctions. The move is part of the Operation Clean Up Edo campaign, aimed at addressing environmental infractions and promoting a clean and healthy environment.
Mrs. Efosa Imade, Acting-General Manager, Compliance, Edo State Waste Management Board, emphasized that the government will no longer tolerate practices that harm the environment. “We are inspecting public spaces and facilities that channel sewage and waste water into public drains, causing flooding and health hazards.”

The exercise has already uncovered instances of environmental neglect, including a facility with a strong stench that could cause respiratory diseases. “The aesthetic appeal of the area has been lost, and the smell is unbearable,” Imade noted.
Mr. Mukhtar Yusuf-Osagie, Commander, Edo State Public Works Volunteers Scheme, warned that violators will face sanctions under relevant environmental laws. “We will take necessary actions to address these environmental infractions and ensure compliance.”
The government’s efforts aim to mitigate the impact of flooding in Benin-City, which has affected residents and properties. By enforcing environmental laws, the government seeks to promote a cleaner, healthier environment for all.
