Over 5,600 Vehicles Switch to Compressed Natural Gas in Edo — Obaseki
Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki revealed that over 5,600 vehicles in Benin City have switched to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), citing data from NIPCO Gas, a Joint-Venture Company (JVC). He made this announcement while addressing journalists in Benin City.
Obaseki urged investors to explore alternative energy sources like natural gas, especially in light of the subsidy removal, which has led to increased transportation costs. He highlighted NIPCO Gas’s initiative, launched in 2007 and commissioned in 2009, which enables vehicles to run on CNG.
The governor emphasized Edo State’s abundant on-shore gas reserves, stating, “We are blessed with a lot of gas in Edo. There’s no reason why our tricycles and vehicles should be using petrol.” He noted that the state has the highest number of gas stations in the country.
To mitigate rising fuel costs, Obaseki advocated for diversifying the economy and attracting more manufacturing companies to Edo State. He praised NIPCO Gas’s efforts in establishing 15 CNG stations in Benin, with plans to construct an additional 15 stations in and around the city.
By promoting alternative energy sources, Obaseki aims to reduce dependence on petrol and foster economic growth in Edo State.
