Akoko Edo Local Government Area and Akoko Edo Community Newspaper

Akoko Edo Local Government Area is the oldest grass-roots governance geo-political unit in Nigeria. With its prominent and remarkably distinct geological feature called “Kukuruku Hills”, it shares boundaries with two states and borders with two other Local Government Areas in Edo State.

 

Also, it stands proudly at convergence between the North Central and the Northern part of the South-South Geo-political zone of Nigeria. It is multi-ethnic and multi-lingual. Its people are basically Christians, Muslims, Animists, and adherents of diverse local gods. Save for subsistence farming, trading, and artisanal rock quarrying, its economic activities are pygmyish, but the people are resilient.

 

Inspite of the fact that they’ve been long forgotten by Superintending and Supervising Governmental Authorities, they have remained peaceful and hopeful. A fundamental aspect of this long drawn situation is a wide and gaping lacuna of communication. As we all know, communication facilitates symbiosis and mutual growth as well as development.

 

This ideal, currently lacking, is what the Akoko Edo Community Newspaper seeks to achieve: a motive force for its existence and activities.

The Akoko Edo Community Newspaper project is therefore, targeted at providing a platform for multi-faceted interaction between inhabitants of the area as well as amongst them and others in the diaspora. Additionally, it aims at facilitating communication between the government and all segments of society.

 

In this endeavour, its areas of interest cut across a broad spectrum of community concerns and activities, including couture, commerce, cousine, entertainment, economy, arts, trade, and agriculture, amongst several others.

 

In pursuit of this goal, the Akoko Edo Community Newspaper intends to be informative, objective, politically non-partisan, non-denominational in matters of religious persuasion and, non-litigious. Akoko Edo Community newspaper will promote mediation, conciliation, and arbitration as first options in the resolution of disputes amongst its people.

 

In recognition of the need to respect the divergent opinions of individuals in all matters of inter- and intra-communal concern, we shall be hard on the principled stand but soft on the differences of opinions, as these are the building blocks of true democracy. Akoko Edo Community Newspaper shall at all times epitomise the highest ideals of positive ethics-based journalism.
