The people of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area in Edo State marked a momentous occasion on Saturday as they warmly welcomed the Edo State Deputy Governor, High Chief Marvelous Omobayo Godwins, celebrating his inauguration as the state’s second-in-command. Amidst the jubilation, there arose a unified call for the establishment of two more local government councils within the area, renowned as the oldest local government council area in the nation.

The event, organized by the Akoko-Edo Development Association (AEF), a nonpartisan group dedicated to fostering progress, expressed gratitude to Governor Godwin Obaseki for appointing one of their own to such a prestigious position, a move they believe breaks the longstanding political barriers in the area.

Dr. Charles Jagun, Chairman of the Association, emphasized the community’s eagerness for the establishment of a tertiary institution, viewing it as a catalyst for economic growth. He stressed the AEF’s commitment to advocating for strategic development initiatives, including the call for the immediate establishment of a tertiary institution, foreseeing its potential to generate employment opportunities, spur economic activities, and enhance infrastructure within the locality.

Furthermore, Dr. Jagun revealed the Association’s initiative to submit a memorandum to the National Assembly Constitution Review Committee, advocating for the creation of two additional local government areas from the existing geographical entity. This move aims to decentralize governance and foster development at the grassroots level, echoing similar models implemented in various states across the country.

In his address, Deputy Governor Marvelous Omobayo Godwins attributed his appointment to divine providence, acknowledging the enduring resilience of the Akoko-Edo people amidst adversity. He recounted the Governor’s rationale behind his selection, emphasizing the imperative to address the longstanding neglect and marginalization experienced by the community.
