In an unexpected turn of events, Ambrose Alli University (AAU) in Ekpoma, Edo State, has annulled the final examinations that took place on January 29. This decision has sparked widespread discussion among students and faculty alike.
Mr. Ephraim Isiraojie, the university’s Registrar, issued a memo explaining that the cancellation stemmed from the “wild jubilation” exhibited by graduating students from the Faculty of Arts in blatant disregard of the institution’s regulations.
Despite previous admonitions against such celebrations, students from various departments—specifically Mass Communication, English, History, and International Studies—engaged in celebratory actions including car displays, the use of sirens, and obstructing roads leading to and from the university.
In light of these violations, Isiraojie stated, “The university management in an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, has decided to invoke the extant laws on wild jubilation/celebration.” As a direct consequence, all final exams conducted on that date, including courses such as ELS41I, MAC 414, and IIIS416, have been cancelled.
The Registrar further noted that the university’s administration will determine a new schedule for the affected examinations in the near future. He added that this measure aims to serve as a warning to all graduating students who have yet to complete their final assessments, emphasizing that the management is committed to ensuring order and discipline within the campus environment.
The decision has raised questions about the balance between celebratory student culture and institutional regulations, underscoring the ongoing challenges universities face in fostering a conducive academic atmosphere while allowing for student expression.
