ANEEJ Calls on Speaker of Edo House of Assembly to Transform Social Protection Policy into Law

In a resolute push for the wellbeing of Edo State’s residents, Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director of Africa Network for Economic and Environmental Justice (ANEEJ), called on the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly to transform the social protection policy of the state into law. Rev. Ugolor made this appeal during a press conference held in Benin City to discuss the Enhancing Social Protection Programmes in Nigeria Project (ESPPIN).

ANEEJ emphasized the proactive role that the House of Assembly must play in ensuring the translation of the social protection policy into law, recognizing its significant impact on the welfare of the people in various constituencies.

While commending the administration led by Governor Obaseki for their commitment to implementing a social protection law in the state, Rev. Ugolor criticized the neighboring Delta State Government for failing to take steps towards establishing a policy in the realm of social protection.

He stated, “Edo has a social protection policy, but our strategy is to engage with the House of Assembly to transform it into law. We appreciate the state government’s willingness to take action.”

Rev. Ugolor revealed that the National Social Investment Programme, renowned as one of Africa’s largest social protection initiatives, serves as a beacon of hope for millions. With an annual allocation exceeding $1 billion, this program goes beyond budgetary numbers; it represents our collective commitment to uplifting the less privileged and forging a more equitable society.

He emphasized the urgency of robust interventions to combat poverty, citing Nigeria’s stark reality. With a population of 213.4 million, 63 percent (133 million people) live in multidimensional poverty, facing diverse deprivations. The sudden removal of fuel subsidy further exacerbates this dire situation, driving up the cost of living to an alarming level.
