Art Meets Politics: Rema’s Lunch with Governor Obaseki
The occasion that marked this promise was a private lunch hosted by Governor Obaseki at the Government House in Benin City for Divine Ikubor, the Edo-born musical prodigy better known as Rema. The meeting held special significance, as Rema had not returned to Edo since Governor Obaseki assumed office six years ago.
During their conversation, Governor Obaseki shared the state’s achievements and expressed keen interest in bolstering the arts, culture, and entertainment sectors. Notably, an iconic art project for the city and the broader region became a focal point of discussion.
Rema, in turn, expressed gratitude to the people of Edo State for their unwavering support throughout his musical journey. He commended Governor Obaseki’s forward-thinking approach, emphasizing that the governor’s vision extended beyond his current tenure.
“The lunch was great,” Rema remarked, “and we spoke about a lot of important things, especially his program for young people. It’s very beautiful to see a governor who cares about the future. He doesn’t just envision the next eight years; he’s thinking beyond that.”
Regarding his own artistic endeavors, Rema highlighted the need to invest in Edo’s youth. “This is the time to do something for the youths,” he asserted. “I’ve already made a breakthrough in the music industry, representing Benin City on global stages. Now it’s time for both the government and the youth to make moves—to re-educate themselves and embrace new rules that benefit the community and drive the evolution of the entertainment industry.”
