Auchi Polytechnic Hosts 22nd Senior Staff Games as 59 Polytechnics Compete in Edo

The 22nd edition of the Nigerian Polytechnics Senior Staff Games Association (NIPOSSGA) officially kicked off in Auchi, Edo State, with 59 polytechnics from across the country participating in the week-long sporting event.

The games, hosted by Auchi Polytechnic in Etsako West Local Government Area, began on Sunday, December 6, and will run until December 14. The opening ceremony featured the symbolic lighting of the torch by the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministry, Prof. Johnson Suleman, marking the formal commencement of the competition.

In his welcome address, Rector of Auchi Polytechnic, Dr. Salisu Umar, highlighted the importance of the games in fostering unity, sportsmanship, and camaraderie among senior staff of Nigerian polytechnics. He noted that beyond academics, the event provides a platform for staff to interact, share experiences, and showcase talents.

“Sporting activities in the polytechnic sector are not new. The purpose of competitions like NIPOSSGA is to foster unity and peaceful coexistence. Hosting this event allows our senior staff to participate actively, promoting mental development, cognitive function, self-reliance, and technological advancement,” Umar said.

He commended the organizing committee for their dedication and assured participants of Auchi Polytechnic’s hospitality. “May the best team win, and may this event strengthen bonds among polytechnic staff while fostering a sense of community,” he added.

The 2025 edition features 10 competitive games, including:

  • Football
  • Volleyball
  • Lawn tennis
  • Badminton
  • Table tennis
  • Chess
  • Scrabble
  • Monopoly
  • Whot
  • Ludo
  • Draught
  • Dart
  • Ayo
  • Tug-of-war

The opening football match between the host institution, Auchi Polytechnic, and Federal Polytechnic Idah (Kogi State) ended in a decisive 3–0 victory for Auchi Polytechnic, setting an energetic tone for the tournament.

The NIPOSSGA games, held annually, serve as a unifying platform for polytechnic staff nationwide. This year’s edition is expected to further strengthen relationships across institutions, promote wellness, and encourage teamwork beyond the classroom and administrative offices.
