A tragic incident unfolded over the weekend in Benin City, Edo State, as a man identified only as Derrick—reportedly based in Europe—was fatally shot by armed assailants during a robbery attempt.
The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, and stated that investigations are underway to apprehend those responsible.
According to reports, Derrick had recently returned to Nigeria and was visiting Igun Street to purchase spare parts for his vehicle when he was accosted by a group of gunmen.
Eyewitnesses suggest the attackers may have trailed him to the location, targeting him for his high-value gold necklace, estimated to be worth ₦50 million.
The confrontation escalated when Derrick reportedly questioned the demand to surrender his jewelry.
One of the assailants, allegedly armed with a pump-action rifle retrieved from a Lexus SUV, shot him twice in the leg before the group seized the necklace and fled the scene.
Despite efforts by bystanders who rushed him to a nearby hospital, Derrick was pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern among residents, with many calling for increased security presence in commercial areas of the city.
CSP Moses Yamu, spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the attack and assured the public that a full-scale investigation is ongoing.
“We are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice,” he said, urging anyone with information to come forward.
The killing has reignited conversations around urban safety, especially for returnees and individuals perceived to be affluent. Authorities are being urged to intensify patrols and surveillance in high-traffic zones to prevent similar tragedies.
