Court Issues Temporary Order to Halt Impeachment Proceedings Against Edo Deputy Governor
In a recent development, a Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a provisional order barring Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State, from impeaching his Deputy, Comrade Phillip Shuaibu. This order was given by Justice Ahmed Ramat Mohammed in response to a motion filed by Shuaibu seeking protection against possible removal from office.
The hearing took place on Friday, with Moses Ebute SAN representing Shuaibu and arguing the motion. He requested the court to put a stop to any attempts to remove Shuaibu from his position. In his verdict, Justice Mohammed instructed all parties involved to maintain the “Status Quo Ante Bellum,” implying they should retain their positions prior to the lawsuit’s initiation.
This order for status quo ante bellum will stay in effect until the defendants have the chance to show cause, as directed in a previous ruling from July 27th, 2023. This implies that all parties must adhere to the positions they held before Shuaib filed the suit marked FHC/ABJ/ CS/1027/2023 against the defendants.
The defendants in this case include the Inspector General of Police (IGP), State Security Service (SSS), Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, and the Chief Judge of Edo State.
