The Edo State House of Assembly has lauded the Edo State Migration Agency for its decisive actions aimed at eradicating illicit drug trade and prostitution along Ihama Road and its adjacent Government Reservation Area (GRA).
This commendation underscores the agency’s role in restoring order and enhancing the integrity of these neighborhoods.
During a plenary session held on Monday in Benin, Mr. Kaycee Osamwonyi, the member representing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Uhunmwode, expressed appreciation for the agency’s initiatives. He articulated that the cleanup has markedly reduced crime, turning the area into a safer and more reputable environment conducive for both residents and businesses.
Osamwonyi noted, “The successful cleanup has not only improved public safety but has also fostered a setting where law-abiding citizens can thrive.”
He urged the Migration Agency to maintain its enforcement strategies while striving to transform Edo into a beacon of law and order, free from activities that could tarnish its reputation.
The lawmaker further called on residents and stakeholders within GRA and the Ihama Road area to support the agency’s efforts in preserving the newly found peace.
“Community cooperation is essential to ensure that the progress we’ve made is not undone and that those involved in illicit activities do not return,” he emphasized.
Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, echoed Osamwonyi’s sentiments and highlighted the importance of Ihama Road as it is the site of the legislative quarters.
He described ongoing criminal activities as a significant embarrassment to lawmakers and insisted that such behavior cannot be tolerated, asserting, “These activities undermine the integrity of the environment.”
Agbebaku recounted the troubling situation prior to the agency’s intervention, stating that stopping on Ihama Road had become a risk, with individuals aggressively hawking drugs to motorists. He praised the Migration Agency’s presence, noting, “Since last week, I have observed that the personnel have taken over that area, and it is now calm and peaceful.”
The Speaker further urged the agency to remain vigilant and maintain its enforcement measures to prevent a potential resurgence of illegal activities. He called on other security forces to collaborate with the Migration Agency by increasing patrols in the area.
Agbebaku concluded by emphasizing the critical need for cohesive efforts between government agencies and community leaders to ensure that Edo remains safe, clean, and free from the scourge of illicit drugs and prostitution.
