The Edo State House of Assembly has taken legal action, appealing the Federal High Court’s decision to overturn the impeachment of former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.
The Assembly has also filed a motion to pause the judgment’s execution pending the appeal’s outcome.
Earlier, on April 8, 2024, the Assembly had impeached Shaibu following a seven-man investigative panel’s report, which probed allegations of misconduct.
The panel, headed by retired Justice S.A. Omonua, investigated Shaibu on charges of perjury and divulging confidential government information. Despite being summoned, Shaibu declined to appear before the panel.
The impeachment was supported by 18 out of 19 Assembly members present, with one member abstaining from the vote. The legal battle has intensified, with the Assembly seeking to uphold its decision and Shaibu fighting to reinstate him to his former position.
