The Edo State House of Assembly convened its session promptly at 9:41 am today and proceeded with a decisive voting process that culminated in the impeachment of the state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.
With 18 out of the 20 present members voting in favour of the impeachment and one member dissenting, the removal of Shaibu was confirmed, solidifying the Assembly’s stance.
Following an investigation conducted by a seven-man panel under the leadership of Justice Stephen Omonua (retd.), appointed by the Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa, Shaibu was found guilty of breaching official secrecy regulations.
Shaibu’s impeachment followed his failure to appear before the panel set up to look into the allegations against him on Friday, February 5, 2024.
In response to this development, Governor Godwin Obaseki has appointed 38-year-old Engineer Omobayo Godwin as the new deputy governor, slated for imminent inauguration.
