A significant realignment has occurred in the Edo State House of Assembly as four lawmakers, led by Majority Leader Donald Okugbe (PDP – Akoko-Edo II), defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday.
Bright Iyamu (PDP – Orhionmwon South II), Richard Edosa (PDP – Oredo West), and Sunday Ojezele (LP – Esan South East) also made the switch, shifting the balance of power. The APC now holds a majority with 13 members, while the PDP is reduced to 11.
The defecting lawmakers were formally received at the APC Secretariat in Benin City by Acting State Chairman Jarret Tenebe. They attributed their decision to “deep divisions and unresolved crises” within their former parties. Speaking on behalf of the group, Edosa hailed the move as a “defining moment,” adding that they “believed in the vision of Gov. Monday Okpebholo and were committed to working with him to advance the state’s development.”
Tenebe, in welcoming the new members, lauded their decision as “a bold step toward a better future for Edo State,” assuring them of equal rights and privileges within the party.
He further emphasized that their defection would strengthen the APC’s “collective resolve to improve governance, security, and economic development in the state,” praising their courage in taking this action.
