Governor Obaseki launched the Edo State Residency Card, a groundbreaking initiative linked to the National Identity Management Commission’s database, providing a single, unified form of identity for residents.
Speaking at the launch in Benin, Obaseki described the ‘Edo Card’ as a roadmap for the state’s technology program, enabling individuals and businesses to engage with the government seamlessly.
Introduced in November 2022, the ‘Edo Card’ creates a unique identifier for residents, aligning with global best practices.
Obaseki emphasized, “Our goal was to harness technology for a sustainable identification framework, enhancing government interaction, expanding social networks, and enabling data-driven public sector service delivery.”
He added, “We aim to issue at least one million cards by 2024, marking a significant milestone in our journey.”
Esigie Aguele, Co-founder/CEO of VerifyMe Nigeria, the technical partner on the project, praised the state government for leveraging private sector expertise in actualizing the project.
