The Edo State Civil Society Organisation (EDOCSO) took to the streets recently, expressing their strong disapproval of the fuel subsidy removal and urging the government to reconsider the move.
The protest, which caused significant traffic disruption on the Benin-Lagos road, saw commuters forced to walk long distances to reach their destinations.
Armed with placards bearing messages like “Nigerians can’t afford N520 per liter” and “Petrol must be N210 till the end of July,” protesters vowed to continue their demonstration until their concerns are addressed.
In a press conference in Benin, former EDOCSO coordinator general Omobude Agho explained that the protest aimed to catch President Bola Tinubu’s attention and prompt action on the fuel price issue.
“We’re protesting the sudden fuel price hike, which jumped from N210 to over N500 overnight. Even NNPC Limited fixed the pump price at over N500, which we believe is a deliberate attempt to burden Nigerians excessively,” Agho said.
“We can’t afford this price increase, and we demand an immediate rollback.”
The group believes the price hike is an unjust burden on Nigerians and is calling for swift government action to address the issue.
