Edo Commences Screening Exercise for 2014-2015 Retirees
The Edo State Pension Bureau has launched a screening exercise for pensioners who retired between 2014 and 2015.
Ambrose Akhato, representing the Permanent Secretary/Chairman of the Edo State Pension Bureau, explained that the exercise is a continuation of the previous screening conducted for retirees from 1996 to 2013. He said, “We have made significant progress in paying gratuity to the previous group, and now it’s time to attend to those who retired in 2014 and 2015.
“Two years ago, in June 2022, the need arose to screen pensioners who retired between 1996 and 2013. His Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki, generously approved the screening process for this group, resulting in timely payments. As we near the completion of payments for this category, the current screening aims to ensure a seamless continuation of gratuity disbursement in Edo State.
“The State Pension Bureau has also sought approval to screen pensioners who retired in 2014 and 2015. These retirees have already begun receiving payments following the successful completion of the previous group’s disbursements.
“The screening process, which began on July 1, 2024, will run until July 12, 2024. To accommodate pensioners living outside the country or facing health challenges, Skype screenings will take place from July 8 to July 19, 2024.
“For pensioners who have passed away, their issues will be categorized as death benefits. Once the available funds are exhausted, the State Ministry of Justice will screen and pay their next-of-kin.”
The State Pension Bureau aims to screen a total of 900 pensioners within the next two weeks. So far, 286 pensioners have successfully undergone the screening process.
Mr. Ehijianagwi James, a retiree from 2014, expressed his joy after completing the screening. He commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for fulfilling his promise to address pensioner welfare.
Mrs. Irene Osa Aiguobaruehien, Treasurer of the Association of Retired Civil Servants Welfare (an arm of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners), praised the well-organized process. Unlike past administrations, where pensioners faced undue stress, the current screening ensures a smoother experience for retirees.
