The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir (Dr.) Lucky Eseigbe, has urged for peace and cautioned against illegal revenue collection by community members as the Edo State Government seeks to resolve the ongoing chieftaincy dispute between the Ikpeshi and Egbigere clans in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.
During a fact-finding meeting held in the Ministry’s conference room in Benin City, Sir (Dr.) Eseigbe emphasized the necessity of hearing from both parties involved in the dispute.
He acknowledged that the issue is currently before the courts and assured attendees that the government is actively exploring Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods to achieve a peaceful settlement.
Highlighting the commitment of Governor Monday Okpbebholo’s administration to promoting peaceful coexistence within the state, the Commissioner reminded both clans that the chieftaincy stool transcends individual occupants.
He expressed gratitude for the existing peace maintained by both parties and encouraged its continuation, reaffirming the government’s dedication to resolving the conflict without further disruption to law and order in the area.
In addition, Sir (Dr.) Eseigbe issued a stern warning against unauthorized revenue collection, which has been identified as a contributing factor to the chieftaincy dispute. He stated that any individual found engaging in illegal revenue activities would face legal consequences, as measures have been established to address such issues officially.
The ongoing chieftaincy dispute involves the Council of Chiefs/Elders and Luckman Momodu Odamah of the Ugono kindred from Ikpeshi/Egbigere in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.
