In a surprise move, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has closed its case at the Edo Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja without calling any witnesses.
The tribunal had previously adjourned the session due to the absence of INEC’s witnesses, who were reportedly traveling from Benin City to Abuja.
However, when the matter was called on Thursday, INEC’s lead counsel, Mr. Kanu Agabi, announced that the commission had decided not to call any witnesses and would instead close its case.
The tribunal proceedings were initiated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Mr. Asue Ighodalo. They have challenged the outcome of the governorship election held on September 21, 2024, targeting INEC, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the incumbent Governor, Monday Okpebholo.
