Edo Engages Hospitality Operators on Benin City Master Plan
The Edo State Government has reiterated its dedication to fostering a sustainable and well-organized society that safeguards the lives and property of residents while promoting socio-economic activities, particularly for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in alignment with the Benin City Master Plan.
During a workshop at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, Commissioner for Physical Planning, Housing, Urban, and Regional Development (MPPHURD), Ms. Isoken Omo, emphasized the importance of upholding the Master Plan to support businesses in the hospitality sector. She underscored the significance of maintaining order in urban development to enhance the livability and business environment in the State.
The workshop served as a continuation of engagements with stakeholders such as traditional leaders, real estate developers, religious figures, building industry professionals, and government agencies. Ms. Omo highlighted the necessity of adhering to regulations to prevent urban sprawl and ensure a sustainable future for the next three decades, emphasizing the need to preserve urban spaces for residential and commercial purposes.
The Commissioner expressed concerns over the recent surge in noise pollution, traffic congestion, and anti-social activities attributed to unapproved activities in the hospitality sector. She called attention to the improper conversion of residential zones to commercial hubs, leading to disruptions in the community.
Addressing the issues, Ms. Omo advocated for proper soundproofing and building materials to minimize noise disturbances, stressing the importance of adequate planning and approval processes for effective urban development. She affirmed the government’s commitment to engaging stakeholders and streamlining procedures to enhance service delivery.
Participants at the event praised the State Government’s efforts to revitalize the city according to the Benin City Master Plan, pledging to adhere to standards regarding approvals, noise control, traffic management, and parking facilities. They recommended extending awareness campaigns to various sectors and requested a grace period before enforcement of compliance measures.
The workshop, attended by owners and managers of hospitality establishments, Acting Permanent Secretary Austin J.E Remison, Director, Enforcement and Development Control Mr. Henry Enabulele, and Ministry staff, highlighted the collaborative efforts towards achieving a sustainable and well-planned urban environment in Edo State.
