The Edo State Government, through its Ministry of Mining, has successfully mediated a dispute between the Edo Tipper Drivers’ Association and the Sand Quarry Owners’ Association, securing a truce aimed at fostering a more harmonious working relationship. The resolution comes after a period of tension stemming from disagreements over pricing and operational practices.
The mediation efforts were spearheaded by the State Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, who initiated a series of strategic engagements with key stakeholders. The process began with public invitations extended to both associations, paving the way for open and constructive dialogue.

“We urged all parties to remain law-abiding and to report any issues directly to the relevant authorities, be it the State or Federal Mining Ministries, or the Civil Defence Corp, which has jurisdiction over mining-related matters in the State,” Hon. Ijegbai stated.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration and mutual respect within the mining sector. “The solutions we have proffered are designed to be lasting and beneficial to all stakeholders. We urge everyone to shun greed in their dealings, recognizing that you are essentially two sides of the same coin in this industry,” he added.
Mrs. Ese Martina Omoruyi, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, underscored the government’s commitment to supporting the mining sector.
“The Ministry is progressive and dedicated to listening to our stakeholders. We are striving to achieve global best practices in the Mining Sector,” she said, expressing her gratitude to both associations for their participation despite the short notice.

The mediation engagements were attended by a diverse group of officials, including Mr. Omoruyi Ihianle, Director of Mining; Mrs. Stacy Osifo, Director of Oil and Gas; Engr. Daniel Agboge, Director of Risk Management Compliance; Mr. Agbonile Lucky, Director of Shared Service; Mr. Ganiyu Ajibade, the South-South Zonal Mines Officer; and Akin Richard, the Deputy Commandant of the Nigeria Civil Defence Corp. Executives from both the Edo Tipper Drivers’ Association and the Sand Quarry Owners’ Association were also present.
During the discussions, representatives from both associations cited grievances related to breaches of prior agreements, indiscriminate price increases, and resistance to alleged extortion attempts as contributing factors to the conflict. However, they collectively affirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and adhering to the law.
The successful mediation and the resulting truce represent a significant step towards ensuring stability and prosperity for residents and businesses within Edo State’s vital mining sector, demonstrating the government’s proactive approach to conflict resolution and economic development.
