The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to fully implement the newly enacted Sanitation and Pollution Management Law, aimed at safeguarding public health and restoring environmental balance across the state.
Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Mr. Nosa Adams, gave the assurance during a stakeholder engagement held on Sunday in Benin City. He explained that the law is designed to strengthen ongoing efforts to keep communities clean, tackle pollution, and reverse years of environmental degradation.
Adams emphasized that the legislation prioritizes remediation, regeneration, and restoration programmes to address long-standing ecological damage. He noted that the ministry will intensify advocacy campaigns to educate residents on the importance of environmental protection and proper waste disposal habits.
“The law is geared toward creating a safe and clean environment for all residents. Environmental cleanliness begins with personal responsibility, starting from individual homes and neighbourhoods,” Adams stated.
The commissioner highlighted the mandates of six agencies under the ministry, including the Forestry Commission and Waste Management Board, stressing that coordination among them is central to achieving improvements in sanitation and pollution control.
He assured stakeholders that wider engagements, including collaborations with the media, are already underway to promote consistent public awareness and compliance.
During the meeting, some stakeholders raised concerns about overlapping responsibilities among agencies tasked with implementing the law. They also called for stronger enforcement mechanisms to ensure meaningful environmental improvements.
Adams responded by noting that the ministry is working to harmonize agency roles and strengthen cooperation to avoid duplication. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and promised regular updates on enforcement measures.
The implementation of the law is expected to significantly improve environmental quality, create cleaner and safer spaces, and support sustainable development across Edo State. Officials believe that the legislation will help tackle harmful practices while encouraging residents to adopt environmentally friendly habits.
Environmental advocates at the meeting urged continuous monitoring to ensure compliance and called for sustained public education campaigns across both urban and rural communities.
