The Edo State Government has reiterated its determination to fully enforce the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) law, pledging justice for victims and stronger protection against abuse.
Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, made the declaration in Benin City on Wednesday. Represented by Mrs. Regina Iyoha, a leader at the Sexual Assault Retreat Centre/GBV, Abdallah emphasized that the government is “doing everything possible to implement the law to the letter.”
She warned against attempts to resolve SGBV cases through traditional or informal means, stressing that “no one is above the law.” Abdallah assured that the ministry will continue to work tirelessly to protect victims’ rights and ensure offenders face prosecution.
Despite progress, stakeholders highlighted ongoing challenges, including families obstructing legal processes by pleading for offenders or attempting to settle cases privately. Reverend Friday Ekhator of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) noted that such practices undermine justice and perpetuate abuse.
Rev. Fr. Benedict Onwugbenu, Director of the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC), explained that the event coincided with Human Rights Day, which affirms the universal right to live free from violence.
Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Habiba Sam, urged women to report all cases of abuse against women and girls. She also cautioned against maltreating housemaids, warning that offenders would face prosecution under the law.
Stakeholders agreed that collective participation is crucial to ensuring the law delivers meaningful change. They emphasized that justice must not be compromised by cultural practices or family interference.
The event formed part of activities marking Human Rights Day and the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a campaign dedicated to raising awareness and mobilizing action to end violence against women and girls.
Officials reaffirmed that Edo State remains committed to strengthening enforcement, raising awareness, and ensuring survivors receive justice and support.
