The Edo State Government has launched a recertification exercise for all petrol and gas stations in Benin City and its surroundings. The exercise aims to ensure that the operators have the necessary permits to run their facilities safely.
The Commissioner for Physical Planning, Urban and Regional Development, Isoken Omo, announced the exercise in a statement. She warned that owners and operators who do not comply with the directive by Thursday, March 31, 2022, will face sanctions such as fines or closure of their facilities.
The exercise was prompted by the recent fire incident at Emmanat Filling Station along Ekenwan Road, Benin City on January 25, 2022. The incident exposed the risks and dangers of petrol and gas filling stations to the public.
The Commissioner said that all owners and operators of petrol and gas filling stations must submit their approved building plans to her office at the Secretariat Complex, Sapele Road, Benin City for clearance and recertification.
