In a significant move to uphold judicial decisions and restore public confidence, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the sum of ₦914 million as compensation to Mr. Tony Adun, popularly known as Kabaka, for the demolition of his hotel by the previous administration.
The announcement was made by the Edo State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, during a press briefing in Benin City.
He revealed that the approval followed a resolution reached at the State Executive Council meeting, in compliance with a court judgment that ruled in favor of the APC State Youth Leader.
Kabaka’s hotel, T. Latifah Hotel and Suites, located in the Ugbor axis of the Government Reserved Area (GRA), Benin City, was demolished on February 5, 2020, by the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The demolition was based on claims that the structure encroached on land designated for a public primary school.
However, in October 2019, Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa of the Benin High Court—now the Chief Judge of Edo State—issued an injunction restraining the state government from carrying out the demolition.
The suit, marked B/151/05/2019, was filed by Kabaka, challenging the legality of the government’s action.
Despite the court order, the hotel was eventually brought down, prompting Kabaka to pursue further legal redress.
The current administration, acknowledging the continuity of governance, has now moved to honor the court’s decision.
“As a governor who respects the rule of law, Senator Okpebholo has approved the compensation as directed by the court,” Ohonbamu stated.
“This action reflects the governor’s commitment to justice, civility, and responsible leadership.” he added.
In a viral video shared on June 13, 2025, Kabaka publicly thanked Governor Okpebholo and his deputy, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, for promising to rebuild the hotel.
The revelation was made during the Democracy Day celebration at the State Government House, where Kabaka described the promise as a personal gift from the governor.
“What makes my Democracy Day today is His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and Hon. Dennis Idahosa, who have promised Kabaka that they will rebuild my hotel,” he said.
The development has sparked renewed discussions on property rights, urban planning, and the importance of due process in government actions. It also underscores the current administration’s commitment to reconciliation and justice for affected citizens.
