Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has called for enhanced collaboration between Edo and the Italian government, emphasizing that cultural exchange can serve as a powerful catalyst for economic development and sustainable progress.
The governor made the appeal during a courtesy visit in Benin City by Mr. Iacopo Foti, Deputy Head of Mission at the Italian Embassy in Abuja. The visit, which took place over the weekend, was highlighted in a statement issued by Mr. Patrick Ebojele, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.
Governor Okpebholo expressed Edo State’s readiness to engage in strategic partnerships with Italy, particularly in sectors that promise mutual benefits. He underscored the importance of sub-national cooperation as a pathway to global relevance and inclusive growth.
“Edo is rich in culture, history, creativity, and enterprise. We believe that partnerships built on these strengths will yield lasting dividends,” the governor stated.
The visit also facilitated broader stakeholder engagement across Edo’s three senatorial districts. Mr. Foti met with key figures including:
- Commissioner of Police, Mr. Monday Agbonika
- Deputy Chairman of APC, Mr. Sylvester Aigbobor
- Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, Chief Blessing Agbebaku
- Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr. Julius Ihonvbere
- CEO of Ocean Wave Group, Mr. Peter Black Omoh Dunia
These interactions provided a platform to explore opportunities for collaboration in areas such as tourism, security, and cultural preservation.
Mr. Foti expressed admiration for Edo State, describing his visit as enlightening and filled with anticipation. He noted that his experience in Benin contradicted negative perceptions often portrayed outside the state.
“I see a peaceful and optimistic people. Edo’s rich history, dynamic culture, and entrepreneurial energy confirm why it is proudly called the ‘Heartbeat of Nigeria,’” he said.
Drawing parallels between Edo and Italy, Foti remarked, “Italy is a nation with a rich cultural heritage—from the Renaissance art of Florence. In Edo State, I see a similar spirit—a proud people who honour their past and confidently shape their future.”
He commended Governor Okpebholo’s administration for its efforts in strengthening security, noting that a safe environment is essential for attracting tourism, investment, and long-term development.
