Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has reaffirmed his stance on requesting former Anambra Governor Peter Obi to provide prior notice before visiting Edo, emphasizing that the directive was a security precaution, not a threat.
Speaking at the inauguration of Edo Line, a state-owned transport company, in Benin on Tuesday, Okpebholo clarified that his advice stemmed from his role as the state’s chief security officer and a past tragedy that claimed the life of his police orderly in 2024.
“I have no regrets asking Obi to notify me before visiting. It’s basic protocol,” Okpebholo stated, recalling the 2024 incident where his orderly, Inspector Akor Onu, was killed after he ignored a similar security advisory from the Commissioner of Police.
“That painful experience guides my stance on security protocols,” he added, noting that Obi’s failure to inform him of a recent visit disregarded standard procedure.
Okpebholo dismissed criticisms, saying, “If asking for notification is a crime, so be it.”
The governor also celebrated the launch of Edo Line, attributing its success to increased federal allocations and President Bola Tinubu’s support.
“Without a father like President Tinubu, this dream would not have come true. His Renewed Hope Agenda is transforming Edo and Nigeria,” Okpebholo said, thanking Edo residents for their electoral support and promising continued progress.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the event’s guest of honor, backed Okpebholo’s position on security protocols, stressing that high-profile figures like Obi must inform state governors before visits to ensure safety.
Wike noted that Obi had followed such protocols during a visit to Rivers State under his tenure, expressing surprise at the lapse in Edo.
Praising Okpebholo’s leadership, Wike said, “The governor is focused and prepared, delivering practical solutions like Edo Line for students, women, and men.”
Okpebholo’s administration highlighted the transport initiative as a step toward fulfilling campaign promises, with Wike adding that such achievements would ensure the governor’s lasting legacy in Edo.
