Edo Governor Okpebholo Rewards Quiz Champions, Donates Buses on Children’s Day

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has awarded N5 million each to two students from Itohan Girls’ Grammar School for their outstanding performance at the recent national NDDC quiz competition. The students secured second place nationally, after clinching first place in the South-South region.

The governor announced the awards during the 2025 Children’s Day celebration held on Tuesday in Benin City, underscoring his administration’s dedication to education and youth development. “We are proud of their achievement. Edo State celebrates excellence,” Okpebholo stated, also pledging to sponsor future winners to international competitions.

In addition to the cash awards, Governor Okpebholo donated two Toyota Hiace buses to Ogbe Secondary School for Boys and India College, Benin, winners of the boys’ and girls’ football finals, respectively, during the 2025 Governor’s Cup.

Dr. Emmanuel Iyamu, the Commissioner for Education, emphasized the need for collective effort in nurturing children. He urged parents and communities to actively participate in promoting child welfare and encouraged students to report bullying.

The highlight of the event was the Governor’s Cup 2025 football finals. India College, Benin, emerged victorious in the girls’ final with a 1-0 win over St. Angela’s Grammar School, Jattu. Ogbe Secondary School, Benin, secured the boys’ title, defeating St. Peter’s Grammar School, Agenebode, in a closely contested match. The 2025 Children’s Day celebration showcased Edo State’s commitment to fostering academic and athletic excellence among its youth.
