The Edo State government has confirmed eight suspected cholera cases out of 16 reported incidents, reassuring citizens of its preparedness to tackle the situation. Collaborating with World Health Organization (WHO) officials, the state has placed all affected individuals and their contacts under close surveillance.
According to Dr. Ojeifo Stephenson, Director of Public Health, “Nobody should panic; the state is proactive in addressing disease outbreaks. Edo State is equipped to respond to emergencies and combat outbreaks as they arise.”
Regarding the cholera outbreak, Dr. Stephenson explained, “Following last Thursday’s alert, we swiftly investigated suspected cases at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Out of 16 admitted patients, eight tested positive via Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT), and samples have been sent to Abuja’s National Reference Lab for confirmation.”
Dr. Stephenson reported that all but one patient have been discharged from the hospital. The state’s surveillance system is actively tracing contacts and promoting community awareness.
On Lassa fever, Edo State has recorded 226 confirmed cases and 36 deaths out of over 2,300 suspected incidents this year. The government is taking measures to eradicate the disease-carrying rats, ensuring a Lassa fever-free state.
Dr. Stephenson emphasized, “Maintain hygiene, keep environments clean, and seek immediate medical attention for suspected cases.”
