Edo Govt hosts World Bank, seeks Collaboration to Rev Up Transport Infrastructure
In an effort to rejuvenate the transport infrastructure in Edo State, the government has welcomed a delegation from the World Bank. This visit is part of a preliminary mission for urban mobility in the state, highlighting the state’s dedication to enhancing transportation with global assistance.
The World Bank team, led by Fatima Arroyo, is cordially welcomed by Osarodion Ogie, Secretary to the State Government, at Government House in Benin City. He expresses his appreciation for their ongoing partnership and support, especially in initiatives like EdoBEST in the education sector.
In addressing the city’s mobility issues, Ogie underscores the establishment of the Edo State Transport Authority in 2018 and the creation of a comprehensive roadmap for the transport sector.
During their two-day visit, the World Bank delegation, which is focused on supporting urban mobility in Nigeria, carries out initial assessments and identifies key transport challenges in the state. The team applauds the State Government’s efforts before proceeding to engage with the Edo State Transport Authority.
At the Edo State Transport Authority, the Managing Director, Mrs. Edugie Agbonlahor, formally welcomes the delegation. She expresses her gratitude for the World Bank’s interest in the state’s transportation system and anticipates a productive collaboration.
Dr. Desmond Amiegbebhor, the Consultant and Technical Advisor to the Edo State Transport Authority, offers insights into the sector’s progress and highlights the need for support and expertise in crucial areas such as bus route networks, environmental studies, and transit infrastructure development.
Dr. Tom Obaseki, Chairman of Oredo Local Government Area, commends the State Governor for fostering an environment conducive to partnerships and investments. Recognizing the pivotal role of organized transportation in making Edo State a prime tourist destination, he assures unwavering support to both the Edo State Transport Authority and the visiting World Bank team.
In addition to the official engagements, the World Bank delegates partake in a tour of the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), gaining insights into ongoing research and its impact on the completed facility. The visit concludes with a guided tour of the National Museum, where they delve into the rich historical artifacts and the fascinating story of the Benin Kingdom.
To deepen the World Bank’s involvement in Edo State’s transport sector and address existing challenges, further engagements and collaborations with stakeholders have been planned. The state government is eager to strengthen the partnership for a more streamlined and efficient transportation network.
Key participants at the engagement meeting include Deborah Enakhimion, Permanent Secretary, Office of the SSG; Mrs. Hauwa Dupe Ohikhuare, Managing Director, Edo State Transport Service (ECTS); Mrs. Fifi Omage-Dimowo, Corporate and Legal Secretary, ESTA, among other agency directors.
The World Bank team includes Fatima Arroyo, Senior Transport Specialist, Washington, DC; Olatunji Ahmed, Senior Transport Specialist, Abuja; O’Neall Massamba, Ajay Kumar, Kevin Huaman, Rakesh Tripraehi, and Christopher Haesler.
