Edo Govt introduces ROTA Virus Vaccines for Children
In a remarkable move aimed at bolstering the well-being of children in Edo State, the government has officially added ROTA Virus vaccination to the Routine Immunization Schedule, along with an Integrated Measles Vaccination Campaign.
The unveiling ceremony took place at the Eyaen Primary Health Centre in Uhunmwode Local Government Area on Monday, November 21, 2022. Representing the Deputy Governor, Commissioner for Health Dr. Prof. Obehi Akoria spearheaded the event.
Emphasizing the significance of immunization, the Deputy Governor highlighted its critical role in preventing the adverse consequences of vaccine-preventable diseases, thereby safeguarding the lives of children.
Praising the proactive efforts of the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, the Deputy Governor applauded their meticulous preparation and seamless execution of the campaign.
The Executive Secretary of the Edo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Omosigho Izedonmwen, also highlighted the importance of ROTA Virus vaccination during his welcome address. He noted that the introduction of this vaccine into routine immunization aims to achieve exceptional immunity coverage for children.
Dr. Izedonmwen explained the contagious nature of ROTA Virus, which manifests as diarrhea in children, often accompanied by symptoms such as vomiting and fever. He stressed that ROTA Virus vaccine is the only effective method to protect children against the disease, as no specific treatment is available.
Urging parents and guardians to embrace the program, Dr. Izedonmwen emphasized that the vaccines would be readily accessible at all primary healthcare centers across the state. He reassured them of the safety, effectiveness, and harmlessness of both the measles and ROTA Virus vaccines.
