Edo Govt sets to clampdown on unregistered private schools

In a bid to streamline and improve the education system, the Edo State Government has announced its plans to initiate a clampdown on unregistered and unapproved schools in the state starting from August 2023.

Rosaline Okosun, the Acting Director General (DG) of Quality Assurance (QA) at the Ministry of Education, disclosed this information during a meeting with leaders and private school owners in the state. She emphasized that the government’s increased monitoring of schools aims to enhance the quality and standard of education within the state and is not intended to target or persecute anyone.

The government’s decision to take action against unregistered and unapproved schools is part of its commitment to reform the education system and ensure that students receive education from reputable and accredited institutions. By cracking down on such schools, the government aims to protect the interests of students and maintain high educational standards.

She said 1,716 private schools have been registered in the state, including 920 primary and 796 secondary schools.

She said: “We have more than these numbers of schools in Edo. Others are not yet registered, and we are here to work together to ensure all private schools in the state are registered. The state government is
concerned about learners and what they will benefit from the educational system. So, it is no longer business as usual.
