Edo govt to lift ban on gold mining in Dagbala Community, assures increased security

The Edo State Government has given a firm assurance to stakeholders that it will soon lift the ban on gold mining in the Dagbala Community, located in the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the state.

Engr. Ethan Uzamere, the Commissioner for Mining and Energy, made this announcement during his visit to inspect the construction of buildings for security personnel in the community. The purpose of these efforts is to enhance security in the area.

The ban on gold mining in Dagbala Community was initially imposed due to the infiltration of terrorists, which posed serious threats to the safety and welfare of residents.

During the inspection, Uzamere stated that the mines in the community were shut down last year due to security concerns. The government deemed it necessary to ensure the implementation of proper security infrastructure before reopening the mining sites.

Uzamere expressed his regret over the negative consequences faced by the community as a result of the mining activities. He emphasized that the community plays a vital role in maintaining security, as they possess more intelligence than anyone else, being familiar with their surroundings and able to identify outsiders in the area.

The commissioner stated, “Our visit today is primarily to inspect the buildings that have been provided for security operatives and also to assess the mining sites. We are highly impressed and satisfied with the buildings donated for security personnel. This demonstrates the importance of the mining industry to Dagbala Community, as both the community and the miners’ association contributed to the construction.”

He further added, “We will now compile our findings and make decisions on the next steps to be taken regarding the mining sites.”

Uzamere emphasized the need for collaboration between the state’s security network and the community’s vigilante group to ensure the safety of individuals at the mining sites and the community as a whole.

The Okaku I of Dagbala Community, His Royal Highness Albert Agbebaku Okogbe, commended the state government for its commitment to lifting the ban on mining and acknowledged the significance of this decision for the community’s progress.

Representative of licensed miners in the community, Shaba Stephen, confirmed that the removal of illegal miners had been successfully carried out by the community and legitimate miners. They have also provided buildings for various security agencies to serve as offices and residences. The community has reached an agreement that any unlicensed miner will be promptly reported to the appropriate authorities.

Akinluko Richard, the Deputy Commandant of the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), reaffirmed their dedication to protecting government critical infrastructure. He emphasized their readiness to ensure the safety and security of the mining sector through unwavering commitment and strength.
