Edo House of Assembly Gives Financial Autonomy Bill its Second Reading

On Monday, the Edo State House of Assembly made significant progress on a pivotal bill for financial autonomy, advancing it to its second reading.
The proposed law aims to grant the State Assembly the financial independence it is entitled to, as required by Section 121 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s constitution.
The majority leader, Honorable Charity Aiguobarueghian, fervently spearheaded the debate on the bill’s second reading, highlighting the constitutional duty that demands adherence. In light of the recent strike action by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Honorable Aiguobarueghian ensured a timeline was set to fast-track the bill’s passage.
In his appeal for the backing of his respected peers, the majority leader emphasized how the bill would equip the House with the power to effectively scrutinize the executive and judicial branches of government when required. Numerous lawmakers voiced their support for the bill, acknowledging its capacity to foster accountability and equilibrium of power.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku emphasized cooperation over conflict with the executive branch and restated that the autonomy the bill seeks to achieve will not obstruct cooperation but rather further the common interests of the people.
Chief Whip Hon. Yekini Idaiye, a representative from Akoko-Edo 1 constituency, skillfully led the ad hoc committee that Speaker Agbebaku ordered to be established in order to guide the legislative process.
The esteemed committee members comprise Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Maria Edeko, PDP representative of Esan North-East 2 constituency, PDP representative of Esan South East constituency, Honorable Sunny Ojezele, and APC representative of Esan West, Honorable Ibhamanu Aigbokhan.
The committee also invites the insights and contributions of Honorable Donald Okogbe, the PDP representative of Akoko-Edo 2 constituency, Honorable Kingsley Ugabi, the APC representative of Etsako East, and Honorable Addeh Isibor, the APC representative of Esan North East 1 constituency.
With the groundwork laid for a significant transition towards financial autonomy, the Edo State House of Assembly demonstrates its dedication to upholding democratic values, ensuring accountability, and protecting the interests of the citizens.
