Edo House of Assembly Honors President Tinubu for Establishment of University of Sports in Afuze

The Edo House of Assembly has commended President Bola Tinubu for his recent approval of a University of Sports in Afuze, describing the initiative as a significant and welcome development for the region.

This announcement was made known through a statement from Samson Akhanieme, Chief Press Secretary to Julius Ihonvbere, the House Leader and representative of the Owan West/East Federal Constituency, on February 11, 2025.

During a plenary session in Benin, Speaker Agbebaku highlighted that the establishment of the university emphasizes the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing sports education and cultivating talent across Nigeria.

“The decision underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to the promotion of sports education and talent development in Nigeria,” Agbebaku stated.

He further noted that the university aims to become a nucleus for developing world-class athletes while contributing to the broader enhancement of sports in the nation.

Additionally, Agbebaku projected significant economic benefits arising from the institution, which he believes will attract investments and create job opportunities in Afuze and surrounding areas. He expressed optimism about the potential for infrastructural development that the project will bring to the Owan region.

“This is a welcome development, and it will also be like the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, that has impacted positively on the entire Esan land and its environs,” Agbebaku remarked. “It is a joy to the Owan nation, and the joy and development will also extend to the people of Owan West that I represent.”

Agbebaku called upon all stakeholders, including the Edo State government, traditional rulers, and community leaders, to collaborate in ensuring the successful establishment of the university.
