Edo House of Assembly Reinstates Lawmakers After Five-Month Suspension

After a five-month suspension, the Edo State House of Assembly has announced the recall of Donald Okogbe and Adeh Isibor, two lawmakers who were suspended alongside Bright Iyamu over an alleged plot to impeach the Speaker and other principal officers.

The situation unfolded on May 6, when the Assembly took the unprecedented step of suspending three members: Donald Okogbe of the People’s Democratic Party representing Akoko-Edo II, Adeh Isibor of the All Progressives Congress serving Esan North-East I, and Bright Iyamu of Orhionmwon South. The suspensions stemmed from allegations that the legislators were involved in a conspiracy to impeach the Speaker and other key officers of the Assembly.

Notably, Bright Iyamu was able to secure his reinstatement in June after demonstrating remorse, a move that was welcomed by the Assembly’s leadership, including Speaker Blessing Agbebaku.

This reinstatement was seen as a move towards reconciliation and healing within the Assembly, helping to bridge divides that emerged during the turbulent period of suspensions.

On Wednesday, during a session in Benin, Speaker Agbebaku publicly announced the reinstatement of Okogbe and Isibor, confirming that they were officially recalled from suspension.

This announcement was made in a context reflecting on the Assembly’s recent challenges and accomplishments.

Agbebaku also took a moment to extend congratulations to the newly elected governor, Monday Okpebholo, emphasizing that the governor’s administration should serve all Edo residents regardless of political affiliation.

The Speaker expressed a cautious optimism, hoping that the new governor would not fall prey to the influence of sycophants, thereby strengthening governance in Edo State.

Welcoming the lawmakers back into the fold after an extended recess, Agbebaku acknowledged the importance of their roles and expressed gratitude for their commitment to progressing the Assembly’s legislative agenda. He emphasized the critical nature of their work in ensuring the passage of impactful bills and resolutions that cater to the needs of Edo State citizens.

In addition to addressing the notable developments regarding the recalled lawmakers, the Assembly also approved a proposed calendar outlining a schedule of 57 sittings for the second quarter of its second legislative session. This move signifies the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining a productive legislative schedule and engaging actively in governance dynamics.
