Edo Mobilizes Support for Riverine Communities Amidst Flood Threats

In a proactive move, the Edo State Government has announced comprehensive support measures for residents of riverine communities vulnerable to the impending floods. The state has initiated plans to provide relief and ensure the safety of those living along the River Niger’s banks.

During a press briefing at the Udaba Ekperi Resettlement Camp in Etsako Central Local Government Area, Engr. Osasere Evboumwan, Commissioner for Special Duties, outlined the government’s strategy to relocate those in low-lying areas at risk of displacement due to the river’s overflow.

The state has issued warnings to residents in susceptible regions and has stocked up on essential supplies such as food, blankets, and medicines. The Resettlement Camp is equipped with residential hostels, administrative offices, sanitation facilities, water supply systems, a 30kva generator, solar-powered borehole, and mosquito nets to cater to the displaced population’s needs.

Hon. Gowon Yakubu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, emphasized the government’s preparedness, citing weather forecasts predicting widespread flooding from the River Niger. The state has expedited the readiness of its Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp for potential evacuations.

The camp boasts an administrative building, medical facilities, communal kitchens, and extensive fumigation efforts to maintain hygiene and health standards. With the capacity to house over 1,500 individuals, the state is determined to stay ahead of the crisis.

Dahiru Yussuf, Head of Operations for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Edo State, confirmed the agency’s readiness to assist, with resources and personnel on standby to support the evacuation efforts. The state’s commitment to the welfare of its riverine communities stands as a testament to its dedication to proactive disaster management.
