The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Edo has made an urgent appeal to the state government to address the numerous infrastructure and operational challenges confronting the orientation camp in Okada.
Mrs. Frances Ben-Ushie, Coordinator of the NYSC in Edo, made the appeal during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream II Corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Okada, on Friday.
Ben-Ushie identified critical gaps in accommodation, training facilities, welfare, and logistics support, emphasizing that these gaps could erode the effectiveness of NYSC operations in the state if left unaddressed.
“Our camp currently faces inadequate hostel accommodation for corps members and officials, insufficient workshops and labs for SAED training, and a lack of multipurpose hall,” she lamented.
The NYSC coordinator also highlighted the growing burden of electricity tariffs and generator running costs, the lack of a dedicated operational vehicle for monitoring corps members, and the need for completion of the camp access gate and resolution of encroachment issues.
Ben-Ushie urged the state government to intervene in these pressing matters, stating that their attention and support would greatly improve the NYSC’s ability to deliver quality orientation and service experiences.
In his address, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo, represented by Mrs. Aiyegbeni Balogun, reaffirmed his administration’s support for youth empowerment and national unity.
Okpebholo emphasized the immense opportunities that exist in Edo across key sectors and encouraged the corps members to embrace the year-long service with zeal and purpose.
“On behalf of the government and good people of Edo State, I warmly welcome you to our vibrant state, rich in culture, history, and opportunities,” the governor said.
A total of 1,370 prospective corps members, comprising 672 males and 698 females, were successfully registered as part of the Batch ‘A’ Stream II.
