The Edo State Government has kickstarted a transformative initiative aimed at empowering 500,000 poultry farmers through comprehensive training and strategic partnerships to enhance productivity.
The groundbreaking scheme, a joint effort by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in collaboration with Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Limited and Heifer International, Nigeria, sets the stage for a paradigm shift in poultry farming practices in the state.
Under the visionary leadership of Commissioner Stephen Idehenre, the government has rolled out an ambitious training program designed to equip poultry farmers with cutting-edge skills and international best practices in poultry production.
Speaking at the launch of the training exercise at the Agricultural Development Project (ADP) premises in Benin City, Mr. Idehenre reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to revolutionize the poultry value chain in Edo State, in line with the landmark MoU signed with Heifer International and Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Limited.
The program, slated to span the three senatorial districts of the state, not only aims to enhance the technical proficiency of farmers but also provides a pathway for them to achieve financial empowerment through the innovative concept of “Farm to Bank.” Commissioner Idehenre assured farmers of the government’s steadfast support, emphasizing the prioritization of agricultural development across all regions of Edo State.
Highlighting the government’s pro-farmer initiatives, Mr. Idehenre underscored the commitment to eradicating poverty among farmers through targeted agricultural reforms. By operationalizing a funding model based on the economics of production, the state government aims to catalyze sustainable growth in the farming sector, with various stakeholders synergizing to create a conducive environment for farmers to thrive.
Moreover, the transformational impact of the government’s interventions is evident in the success stories emerging from other agricultural ventures such as fish farming and maize production. The strategic partnerships forged with key industry players have not only stabilized markets but also created avenues for farmers to commercialize their produce effectively, further boosting economic resilience in the state.
Amidst the intensive training of over 230 poultry farmers, the Programme Coordinator – Livestock, Heifer International, Nigeria, Mrs. Onyekachi Ayevbuomwan, reiterated the program’s business-oriented approach focused on empowering participants with practical skills and knowledge.
Emphasizing the importance of adopting best practices in poultry farming, Mrs. Ayevbuomwan commended the Edo State Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for their unwavering support towards transforming the livelihoods of poultry farmers.
As the government-led initiative gains momentum, the stage is set for a new era of sustainable agriculture, where empowerment and partnership pave the way for increased prosperity and growth in the poultry industry.
