Edo Plans Local Tourney for 15 Sporting Competitions for Youth

The Edo State Government has unveiled an impressive plan to host local tournaments encompassing 15 diverse sporting competitions.

The announcement, made by the Edo State Acting Governor, Rt. Hon. Comr. Philip Shaibu, in Benin City, reveals the government’s dedication to harnessing the full sporting potential of its vibrant youth population while simultaneously generating employment opportunities through sports.

With the introduction of the Edo league tournaments spanning across 15 sports, the government aims to create over 50,000 job opportunities.

This ambitious initiative ensures that the state’s energetic and talented youth population can be positively engaged, deterring them from involvement in criminal activities and forging a prosperous and secure future for all.

Shaibu noted that “the easiest way to deal with youths’ restiveness and unemployment is to engage the youths in sporting activities.”

The acting governor said the Edo league for the 15 games will begin from January 2023, calling for the support of all stakeholders, including private organisations to ensure the realisation of the project.

Reassuring support for private organisations and other businesses, Shaibu said, “Ensuring that the state’s economy is driven by the private sector is our primary concern. The government is being repositioned to foster an atmosphere that encourages economic growth.”

He continued, “We are starting a flagship program for the 15 sports in January 2023.  By doing this, we will be able to revitalize our young people and involve them in constructive activities, keeping them away from anti-social activities.”
