The Edo State Police Command successfully rescued Osazee Okungbowa, who was kidnapped on Friday night in the Owanoba community. The rescue operation took place on February 8, when police operatives from the Ologbo Division located and freed the victim around 5:00 p.m.
CSP Moses Yamu, the command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident on Sunday in Benin City. “Five armed men allegedly kidnapped the victim at about 9:45 p.m. in the presence of his family,” Yamu stated. He added that Okungbowa has since been reunited with his family after receiving medical attention, while efforts to apprehend the suspects are ongoing.
In a separate incident, police arrested a 25-year-old suspected cultist for unlawful possession of a firearm and attempted murder during a burial procession in Old Road, Aduwawa, Benin City. The suspect, identified as a member of the Vikings cult group, allegedly fired shots into the air using a locally made pistol, injuring a bystander, Nzube Cletus Mbum, in the process.
“After the shooting, the suspect attempted to escape but was swiftly apprehended with the help of members of the public. He is currently in police custody and will face charges accordingly.” Yamu explained.
Additionally, operatives from the Okuaihe Division recovered a stolen Toyota Yaris that had been carjacked on February 6 at Upper Mission Extension. The vehicle was snatched at gunpoint, but following a distress call, police pursued the suspects, who abandoned the car at Iguomon Community along Benin-Agbor Road.
“The car was recovered and returned to its rightful owner, while efforts to track down the suspects are ongoing,” Yamu reported.
Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Betty Otimenyin, commended the officers for their swift response and urged residents to remain vigilant. “We appreciate the good people of Edo State for their support. We urge the public to ‘see something, say something’ to ensure a safer Edo State,” she stated.
Otimenyin reassured citizens of the command’s commitment to tackling crime and maintaining law and order throughout the state.
