Edo Police Rescue Reverend Father, Seminarian Dies in Kidnapping Ordeal

The Edo State Police Command has announced the rescue of Reverend Father Philip Ekeli, who was abducted alongside Seminarian Peter Andrew on March 3rd. Tragically, Seminarian Andrew lost his life while in captivity.

The announcement was made Friday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, in a press statement issued in Benin City.

According to Yamu, the duo were kidnapped from St. Peters Catholic Church, located in Iviukha, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.

“Security operatives, working in collaboration with local vigilantes, successfully secured the release of Fr. Ekeli on March 13th, at approximately 4:52 p.m. in Amughe Community,” stated CSP Yamu.

“Bush-combing efforts are ongoing to recover the remains of the seminarian and apprehend the remaining members of the gang,” Yamu added, highlighting the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident.

The police spokesperson also recalled the events that transpired on the day of the abduction. “One suspect was neutralised, and four others were arrested on the day of the abduction,” he confirmed. “Security forces are continuing operations to track down the fleeing kidnappers,” he reiterated.

The command expressed its deep sorrow over the death of the seminarian and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. “The command condemns the killing of the seminarian and assures the public of its commitment to bringing all the perpetrators to justice,” Yamu stated emphatically.

Concluding the statement, CSP Yamu urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement. “He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.”
