Edo Prioritizes Agricultural Development to Ensure Food Security
Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration in Edo State is committed to bolstering agriculture and agribusiness initiatives to secure adequate food supply for the populace.
This dedication was emphasized by Hon. Stephen Idehenre, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, during a visit by members of the Research, Extension, Farmers Linkage system (REFILS) South-South Zone, led by Dr. Celestine Ikuenobe, the Executive Director of NIFOR.
Hon. Idehenre commended the efforts of REFILS in promoting agricultural growth in the South-South Zone and Edo State specifically. He highlighted the state government’s investment in recruiting agriculture extension service officers and providing necessary resources to enhance their performance.
The Commissioner stressed the importance of accurate data collection to ensure inclusivity of all farmers and agribusiness participants in government initiatives.
Furthermore, Hon. Idehenre encouraged mentorship programs to engage youth in agriculture, underscoring the profitability and significance of the sector. Dr. Ikuenobe praised Edo State for its leadership in agricultural development in the South-South region and expressed confidence in sustaining this progress.
Dr. Ikuenobe emphasized the crucial role of extension services in advancing agriculture, asserting that prioritizing such services would greatly benefit Edo State. The meeting, attended by key officials from agricultural ministries, agencies, and institutions, highlighted the collaborative efforts needed to continue driving agricultural development in the region.
