Edo State Assembly Reviews Suspension of three Lawmakers, List Legislative Achievements

The Edo State House of Assembly has established a committee to review the suspension of three lawmakers, which occurred last month.

The speaker, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, announced the suspension on May 6, 2024, citing alleged conspiracy and external influences aimed at destabilizing the Assembly’s leadership.

The affected lawmakers vehemently opposed their suspension, leading to tension within the Assembly. However, addressing the media during a briefing on Wednesday, Agbebaku announced that a committee has been set up to review their suspension, and its report will determine the next course of action.

Agbebaku highlighted the Assembly’s achievements over the past year, including the passage of 16 bills and 44 resolutions. These legislative accomplishments have had a significant impact on the state’s political, social, and economic landscape.

Some notable bills include the Edo State Corps Governance Law 2024, the adoption of “Beautiful Edo, Glorious Edo” as the state’s official anthem, and the establishment of the Edo State oil palm program. Additionally, various petitions are currently being reviewed by different committees.

Agbebaku expressed his gratitude to his fellow legislators for their support and cooperation over the past year, acknowledging the challenges faced by the eighth assembly.

He also thanked Governor Godwin Obaseki for his unwavering support and defense of democracy in the state.

The speaker’s remarks emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in the legislative process, stating, “With a bond of friendship, comradeship, understanding, and unity, the house stands tall.”
