Edo State Government, NEWMAP Lauded for Flood Mitigation Efforts

The Edo State Government, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, and the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) have received widespread acclaim for their collaborative efforts in addressing the perennial flood challenges in the state.
Beneficiaries of the project’s gully sites and flood alleviation interventions in Benin metropolis have expressed gratitude for the government’s commitment to improving their living standards. Residents in areas such as Murtala Muhammed Way, Ogiso axis, Gapiona, Upper Adesuwa, Ebo, and Ogumwenyi have witnessed significant transformations, with the government’s efforts reclaiming gully erosion sites and controlling flooding.
Pastor Samuel Omo praised Governor Obaseki, saying, “The governor has prioritized the wellbeing of Edo people, embarking on projects that better the lives of residents. The gully erosion, formerly, reduced most landlords to tenants, but Governor Obaseki has changed the narrative.”
Odiahi Osaze, another resident, commended the state government for intervening in Gapiona and Upper Adesuwa areas, which were plagued by flood and gully erosion for over 35 years. Elder Richard Omwenyeke thanked the government for the massive erosion control projects, saying, “The project has renewed the confidence of residents, allowing them to live and make progress without fear.”
The collaborative efforts of the Edo State Government and NEWMAP have brought succor to residents, restoring hope and transforming communities previously affected by flooding.
