The Edo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, has announced that education, agriculture, health, and infrastructure are at the forefront of its development agenda. Mr. Bugie Okhuemoi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, shared details of the administration’s focus in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to Okhuemoi, the Okpebholo administration is dedicated to practical initiatives that will foster progress and enhance the quality of life for Edo residents. Acknowledging the critical state of education, Governor Okpebholo has declared a state of emergency in the sector. Efforts are already underway to rehabilitate and reconstruct schools across the state, including Evbareke Secondary School in Egor and Army Day Secondary School in Ikpoba-Okha.
In the agricultural sector, the government has acquired substantial land for the purpose of boosting local food production and ensuring food security. The “Back to Farm” initiative has also been launched to stimulate agricultural activity across the state’s three senatorial districts. This program aims to develop large-scale farms and provide farmers with access to essential resources such as fertilizers and equipment. Loan schemes and other incentives will further support farmers, encouraging mechanized farming and increasing overall agricultural productivity, with the goal of positioning Edo State as a leading agricultural hub in Nigeria.
Significant infrastructure development is also underway, including the construction of a 480-meter flyover at Ramat Park, a project described as unprecedented in the state’s history. Additionally, numerous road rehabilitation projects are in progress throughout Edo State, including major asphalting work on the Ekpoma–Benin highway.
Beyond infrastructure, the administration is focused on job creation and human capital development. Over 2,000 residents have recently been employed into the civil service, bolstering government capacity and reducing unemployment. New hires include teachers, nurses, engineers, and doctors, all of whom will support key sectors such as education and healthcare delivery. Demonstrating a commitment to workers’ welfare, the governor has raised the state’s minimum wage to N75,000, making it one of the highest in the country.
In the health sector, the governor has signed a bill establishing the state College of Nursing, Health Sciences, and Technology in Udomi, Esan Central. This institution aims to train professionals and improve manpower across the health sector.
Okhuemoi stated that these initiatives represent Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to laying a foundation for sustainable development in Edo State.
