Benin City, Edo State – In a strategic move aimed at enhancing the skill sets of residents and reducing unemployment, Governor Sen. Monday Okpebholo has announced plans for a collaboration with an aviation company. This initiative will focus on training Edo citizens in areas such as aviation assembly, piloting, and mechanics, among other essential skills.
Governor Okpebholo made this announcement during a visit to Benin Airport, where he was accompanied by several cabinet members to witness the formal launch of the collaboration. The governor highlighted the initiative as a significant step forward for the people of Edo State, asserting that it aligns with his campaign promises and hints at further developments in the pipeline.
“By partnering with this aviation company, we aim to not only reduce unemployment but also enhance vocational education within our schools, thereby fostering wealth creation throughout the state,” Governor Okpebholo stated. He emphasized that the establishment of the aviation company’s assembly plant would have social and economic benefits, affecting all three senatorial districts of Edo.
Highlighting the scale of the investment, Governor Okpebholo expressed optimism about the extensive benefits the project will provide to the youth in Edo. As part of the state government’s commitment, he pledged to cover the training costs for Edo youths involved in the program.
“This partnership reflects our dedication to the Renewed Hope Agenda championed by President Bola Tinubu, aimed at creating opportunities for all Nigerians,” Okpebholo added.
Ehis Odia, the CEO of the aviation company, underscored the importance of this collaboration, praising Governor Okpebholo for his vision and commitment to the aviation sector in Edo State. “We are set to re-establish a rich history of aviation in Edo. Our plans include assembling light aircraft in Benin City and engaging with local secondary and technical schools to train aspiring aircraft mechanics,” Odia explained.
He also pointed out that the initiative seeks to democratize aviation education, breaking the misconception that it is an exclusive realm for the affluent. “Aero-clubs will be encouraged in schools, and we aim to make aviation accessible as a transportation option for everyone in Edo State,” he remarked.
The visit culminated in a test flight, which involved the Governor, his Chief of Staff Gani Audu, and others, under the guidance of pilot Donavan Lombard. Lombard, who has experience flying aircraft from South Africa into Nigeria, reiterated the lack of a significant aviation industry in the country, expressing confidence that this partnership will enhance transportation efficacy in the region.
This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in Edo State’s journey towards revitalizing its aviation sector and equipping its youth with the necessary skills for the future.
